From cold garage to proper home gym
Plenty of people already train in their garage, on a bare concrete floor with the door half open and breath steaming in winter. A garage gym conversion turns that into a room you'll actually want to use all year round. It's insulated, heated and ventilated, with good lighting and a floor that can take heavy equipment.
The floor plan on this page shows how a single garage can fit a rack, a bench, a cardio machine and a stretching area. A partial conversion is also popular: keep the front of the garage for bikes and storage behind the existing door, and turn the back into the gym.
A home gym also saves time. There's no drive to the leisure centre, no waiting for equipment and no excuse when it's raining. Over a few years, the money saved on memberships goes some way towards the cost of the conversion, and you end up with a properly built room that adds usable space to the house rather than a cold garage full of kit.
